Snapchat for Artists & Makers....Should we?

There's been a lot of discussion lately whether creatives should be on snapchat, and I want to chime in! I personally love sharing my day to day with everyone in my snap story :)

SIX reasons to consider using Snapchat to build your creative community:

  1. It's the most casual social media platform. If you feel pressured for the perfect instagram feed or the perfect tweets, fear not! That is totally not the vibe of snapchat, especially since snaps only last for 24hrs. If you like your story you're welcome to save it, which leads me to my next point...
  2. If you want to start vlogging, this is the perfect way to get started! A snap story is a compilation of short videos and pictures you've compiled over the past 24 hours, which makes for a great low key way to put together a vlog without having to edit. Bonus points: you can add captions, whaaaaaat. *If you're wanting to share it to youtube, get into the habit of snapping horizontally.
  3. We have the most interesting stuff to share: PROCESS. I don't mean to brag, but we're not sitting behind desks 9 to 5; we have jobs that people dream of. It can be difficult to explain all that goes into making pots, paintings, quilts, jewelry, sculptures, etc... Snapchat gives us an easy way to share that with our community, which can bring a whole new appreciation for the amount of work you do!
  4. A creative's life can be lonely. If you've been kooked up in your studio long enough, you'll know what I mean. The same way that twitter has been likened to taking a break and hanging out at the virtual water cooler, snapchat does the same but more visually. If you've tried twitter and don't get it, maybe snapchat will be your thing?
  5. If your audience is on the younger side, they're likely already there. I mean, Bernie Sanders has a snapchat, he knows what's good (haaa).
  6. Lastly, and my most favorite, is building community. By welcoming others and showing tiny bits of my life, I know they feel like they're a part of the journey. I know this because that's how I feel when I see snaps of my fellow artist friends. You're putting a voice and a face behind the work, which ultimately brings connection.
BUT WAIT, what about Periscope? Snapchat is not like periscope; again it's way more casual. You'd be sharing a few seconds of your story; small moments to make up a nifty video journal of your day. Periscope is a bit more of an event, like a webinar on the fly (at least it's definitely leaning that way with the experiences I've had) Where people can ask questions in real time. Different, but still cool!

So are you on snapchat? Who do you follow? Comment below, I'd love to know! Here's an example of one of my snap stories:

Ave, this is awesome! I love getting to see a peek into your day to day. I'd love to connect sometime and maybe photograph you at work. I'm dreaming up a personal project of highlighting local CT makers. Anyways, I'll add you on SC!
